Compared with other brands of PLCs, Siemens S7-1500 PLC has the following advantages:
Performance
Faster processing speed: The CPU bit instruction processing time of S7-1500 series PLC can reach 1ns at the shortest, while Mitsubishi FX series PLC has relatively weak processing speed, and its scanning time is usually between 10ms and 100ms; although Allen-Bradley ControlLogix series PLC also uses high-performance processors, its scanning time is usually between 1ms and 10ms, which is slightly inferior to S7-1500 in multi-tasking and data processing capabilities.
Stronger motion control function: S7-1500 can control up to 128 axes. Through different communication modules and expansion modules, it can flexibly configure and control multiple servo axes and support multiple motion control modes, such as position control, speed control and torque control. In contrast, some models of Mitsubishi R series PLC may support the control of up to 16 servo axes, which is relatively small in terms of the number of axes.
Communication
Rich communication protocols: Support multiple communication protocols, such as PROFINET, Modbus TCP, S7 communication, etc., and also support OPC UA, which is convenient for communication with other systems and devices. The basic communication protocols supported by Mitsubishi FX series PLC include RS-232, RS-485 and Ethernet (Modbus TCP), and the communication capabilities are relatively weak.
Powerful network function: Integrate standard Ethernet port and PROFINET network port with different IP addresses, support PN IRT, ensure accurate response time and high-precision operation of factory equipment, and better meet the application requirements of industrial networks with high real-time and accuracy requirements. Allen-Bradley ControlLogix series PLC supports protocols such as Ethernet (EtherNet/IP), Modbus TCP and DeviceNet, but the integration and convenience of network functions are not as good as S7-1500.
Programming and debugging
Powerful programming software: Using TIA Portal as the programming environment, it supports multiple programming languages, such as Ladder Diagram (LAD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST), Instruction List (IL) and Sequential Function Chart (SFC). It has a friendly interface, powerful functions, and supports project management and multi-user collaboration. Mitsubishi’s GX Works2 or GX Developer programming environment is relatively simple, and its functions are not as powerful as TIA Portal; although RSLogix 5000 has a friendly interface and powerful functions, it has a steep learning curve for beginners.
Convenient debugging and diagnosis: It has unified plain text diagnostic information, which shortens the downtime and diagnostic time for users, supports plug-and-play, does not require programming, and can set an operation password. View the CPU status, process variables, and fault information at any time through the Internet browser, built-in CPU display, TIA Portal, and HMI device. In comparison, PLCs of other brands may have a certain gap in the comprehensiveness and convenience of diagnosis.
Storage
Large memory capacity: With large memory and storage capacity, for example, the high-end S7-1500-3 CPU can be equipped with up to 16MB of working memory and 64MB of loading memory, which can store more programs and data and support more complex control logic. The working memory of Mitsubishi FX series PLC is usually 20KB to 256KB, and the loading memory is 32KB to 512KB, which is suitable for small control systems and simple applications.
Flexible memory card: Supports up to 2GB memory card, which can be used to store project data, archives, recipes and related documents, etc., to meet the storage needs of various project sizes, optimize the stored program blocks, and improve the access speed of the processor.
Reliability and safety
High reliability: With a sturdy shell and good heat dissipation performance, it can operate stably in harsh environments, and supports a variety of anti-interference technologies, such as electromagnetic compatibility design, signal filtering, etc., to ensure the stability and reliability of the equipment, long service life, and up to 50,000 hours of operation. Although other brands of PLC also have a certain degree of reliability, Siemens’ performance in this regard is more outstanding.
Data security: It has perfect security performance, including encryption of user data, protection against illegal access, etc. It supports multiple security protocols, such as SSL, https, etc., to ensure the security of data transmission. This advantage is particularly important today when industrial network security is becoming increasingly important.
Scalability
Rich modules: With a modular design concept, users can choose appropriate modules to combine according to actual needs, such as CPU modules, input and output modules, communication modules, process modules, etc., to meet different performance levels and functional requirements, and facilitate system expansion and upgrades. Although other brands of PLC also have a certain degree of scalability, Siemens S7-1500 has better module types and scalability.
Wide range of applications: It is suitable for medium and large control systems, and can meet automation needs of different scales, from simple stand-alone equipment control to complex distributed control systems. Some other brands of PLC may focus more on small or specific applications.
